Notes:

  • Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suárez finished 24th in Sunday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
  • With rain imminent, Suárez led the field going into turn one on lap 139 of 160 when rain drops appeared on his windshield. A split-second later he and two other leaders began spinning at 200 mph triggering a multicar accident and ending the Trackhouse Racing driver’s race.
  • It was a rain-plagued weekend in Daytona with qualifying canceled Friday and Saturday’s race postponed until Sunday morning. The race restarted three hours and 19 minutes after the lap 139 wreck Sunday and was run to completion.
  • Since rain canceled qualifying Friday, NASCAR set the starting order by the rule book. Suárez started fourth and Ross Chastain 12th.
  • Suárez and Chastain drove conservative races in the early going finishing 17th and 18th in Stage 1, and 15th and 25th in Stage 2.

Daniel Suárez, driver of the No. 99 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet Camaro for Trackhouse Racing:

“We knew the rain was coming.. it was raining next door. It was just a matter of time. Why would we wait for that.. I don’t know. Maybe I’m a little biased because I was in the front, but there’s nothing you can do. Sometimes you are running 200 mph and you’re able to turn left. And then you see a few drops hard and you’re just spinning.

I feel like they have a lot of technology to know that the rain is very, very close. I don’t think it’s hard to not put us in that position.”
