Mexico City, January 8, 2017.- The FIA Americas Awards 2016, which recognized the best pilots at the continental level, was held for the first time in Mexico, where the main protagonists were the pilots Daniel Suarez and Checo Pérez .
NASCAR Xfinity champion Daniel Suarez was unable to come personally to his recognition of Best Senior Pilot because of his preparation for the 2017 season in the US serial, but sent a recorded message to thank the award.
"I want to thank you for receiving the Senior Pilot Award from Mexico, it means a lot to me. I want to thank FIA Americas, Jean Todt, José Abed and Carlos Slim for everything they have done for Mexican motor racing. The other great star of the ceremony was Sergio Perez Mendoza, who was lauded by the FIA as America's Featured Pilot after his stunning 2016 season, finishing seventh in the Formula One driver's championship.
Jalisco said he was proud that "the FIA Latin American awards will be held in Mexico. Seeing Jean Todt, Carlos (Slim) and (Jorge) Abed is an example of what motor racing has grown in Mexico and fills me with pride. "
Meanwhile, FIA President Jean Todt, who presided at the gala ceremony, recognized motor sport growth in Mexico, as he currently has world-class drivers such as Checo Pérez and Esteban Gutierrez.
Axel Matus, Escudería Telmex-Telcel, and Luis "Chapulín" Díaz were also honored at the ceremony. The first by its title obtained from the FIA NACAM F4 Mexican, while the "Chapulín" for its promotion of programs for road safety.
Also attending the gala were the Government of Mexico City, Miguel Angel Mancera, Carlos Slim Domit, and engineer José Abed, vice president of FIA.
Slim Domit, president of Escudería Telmex-Telcel, stressed that the realization of the FIA Americas Awards is a reflection of the work being done in Mexico in favor of motorsports. To sample, he detailed, the recognition for second consecutive year of the Mexican Grand Prix as best event of the whole calendar of Formula One.
He also acknowledged the work of José Abed to help build "a united FIA Americas, a strong FIA Americas and, above all, an active FIA America".
